NEWPORT, N.C. – Clarence H. Smith, 78, of Newport, N.C., died recently after a long illness. A Maine native, he received the Bronze Star for services in Europe during World War II, was a graduate of Bates College and a high school teacher for 42 years. He leaves behind his daughter, Susan Lang; two granddaughters, Beth and Mary; five sisters, Pearl Sirois, Christine Brooks, Claire Foley, Ida Caron, all of Maine, and Carolina Demers of New Hampshire. The funeral services were private.
