EXETER – Claude E. Mc-Dowell, 88, died peacefully July 11, 2008, at the Maine Veter-ans’ Home, Bangor, after a short period of ill health. He was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Princeton, the son of Peter and Beulah (James) McDowell. He was educated in Princeton schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from Aug. 16, 1944, to March 5, 1946. As a young man, Claude worked on log drives. For more than 35 years he worked at Bay State Abrasives, Westborough, Mass. After his retirement, he worked in the produce department at Bud’s Shop ‘n Save, Newport, for 15 years, only then retiring due to ill health. He was a member of Corinna American Legion Post. He loved the outdoors, especially while working in his gardens and doing his yard work. He enjoyed talking and visiting with his friends and neighbors. He is survived by his wife, Darlene F. Dinsmore of Exeter; two daughters, Robin L. Dinsmore of Exeter and Sonja Gayeski of Newington, Conn.; two sons, Adrian McDowell of Sparta, Ga., and Francis McDowell of Sutton, Mass.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; two half brothers, Michael McDowell of Holden and Joseph McDowell of Richmond; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
