SOUTHWEST HARBOR Cora Myrtle Ward Hancock, 99, died May 6, 2007, at an Ells-worth health care facility. She was born March 16, 1908, in Tremont, daughter of Leslie E. and Wilda (Reed) Hamblen. Cora was a past matron and life member of the Eastern Star. She was a past noble grand of Rowena Rebekah Lodge, Southwest Harbor and past district deputy. Cora was a life member and past president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Ellsworth Memorial Post. She was a life member and past president of the Eugene Norwood Post, American Legion Auxiliary, Southwest Harbor. Cora was a past president of the Ladies Patriarch Militant and received the Cross and Degree of Chivalry. Cora will be fondly remembered as being a chef at the following establishments: The Moorings, Manset; Harbor House, Northeast Harbor; Bar Harbor Club and the Bar Harbor Restaurant, Bar Harbor; TKE Fraternity House at the University of Maine in Orono; Young’s Lobster Pot, Bar Harbor and was the pastry chef at the Pot and Kettle Club, until her retirement at age 85. For many summers she worked together with Paul Hinton serving many dinners as well known caterers. She also served on the board of directors of Eastern Agency on Aging for several years. Cora volunteered as a driver and sitter for shut-ins throughout the years. More then anything, Cora was a wonderful, caring mother, grandmother, sister and great-grandmother, had a wonderful sense of humor and will be sadly missed. She is survived by her children, F. Henry Ward and wife, Driscilla, of Southwest Harbor, Ingrid Wormell of Bangor and Leslie “Les” Ward of Bangor; a sister, Mildred Richardson of Franklin; 18 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and several great-great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, William “Willy” Ward; a grandson, Rodney Ward, four sisters and two brothers. A graveside funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Mount Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor, with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Buchanan, pastor of the Tremont Congregational Church UCC, officiating. The family encourages gifts in her memory to Island Connections, 15 Eagle Lake Road, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
