BELFAST – Daisy L. (Roberts) Gushee, 80, went home to the Lord Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 11, 1926, in Belfast, the 10th child of Leslie and Daisy (Howard) Roberts. Daisy married Freeman L. Gushee Oct. 3, 1942. Freeman passed away Sept. 21, 2003, just a couple weeks prior to their 61st anniversary. Together Freeman and Daisy remodeled and decorated many homes before building their retirement home in Belfast. She had the gift of making her family’s house a home. Daisy spent her life loving and caring for her husband, five daughters and their families. There are many loving memories of family and friends gathering for the holidays. No matter who might show up at her door, they were always welcome and never left hungry. Daisy was well known for her custard pies, fudge, chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter balls. This was Daisy’s way of expressing her love for others. Daisy was the kind of woman that always made time for those in need, whether it was taking care of children that needed a loving home or later in life when she worked within the homes of local elderly women that needed the care that someone like Daisy could offer. Surviving Daisy are her five daughters and their husbands, Gloria and her husband, Harvard Bonin Sr., of Tustin, Calif., Sylvia and her husband, Arlan Dakin, of Searsport, Dawn and her husband, Ronald Macleod, of Belfast, Rhonda and her husband, Douglas Stark, of Canaan and Laurie and her husband, Toney Hall, of Brewer. Also very special to Daisy were Deborah Collins Samuels of New York and Kerry Collins of South Carolina; 12 grandchildren, Harvard Bonin Jr., Troy and Robert Dakin, Todd, Randall, Sherrye and Ronnie Macleod, Heidi and Matthew Stark, Benjamin, Thomas and Amber Herbest; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jackie Weaver and her husband, Bob; three brothers-in-law, Lonnie Griffin, Bobby Gushee and his wife, Barbara and David Gushee; three sisters-in-law, June Roberts, Grace Nagle and Eleanor Gushee; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, four brothers and six sisters. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug, 16, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Aug. 17, at the Swanville Community Church.
