BLUE HILL and DEER ISLE David Kimball Ward died Aug. 15, 2007, at a Bangor hospital, after a brief illness, with his beloved wife, Barbara by his side. He was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Westfield, N.J., the son of Ferdinand J. and Faith (Hull) Ward. David graduated from Milburn High School, Milburn, N.J.; Upsula College with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology; and University of Maine at Orono with a Master of Education in education. He did his doctoral studies at Rutgers in science education. In 1957-58, he taught at Harvard in the natural science program. He was professor of biology at Farmington State College and then at Kean University, Union, N.J., for 27 years, retiring in Maine in 1985. David served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II from 1943 to 1946. David and Barbara were married in 1980, at their home Windy Hill in Deer Isle, and have spent many summers there. He enjoyed traveling, both foreign and domestic. He loved his family and nature, enjoyed maintaining his many flower gardens and identifying birds that visited his feeders. He also had many other interests and skills, including trains, model railroading and antiques. He was an artist and enjoyed painting landscapes. He enjoyed and loved his grandchildren of whom he was very proud. David had a lifelong gift of teaching to everyone in his life and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He attended the Deer Isle Congregational Church. David is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Barbara; stepson, Kevin J. Piper of Blue Hill; stepdaughters, Brenda P. Horton of Surry, and Karen A. and Toby Martin of Milford; four grandchildren, Tabor A. Horton of Blue Hill, Christopher G. Smith of Surry, William B. and Samuel A. Martin of Milford; mother-in-law, Berla Putney of Pembroke; sister-in-law, Lydia V.P. Johnson of West Palm Beach, Fla.; as well as a nephew and niece in New Jersey, and a niece in New York. He will be greatly missed his maltese friend, Ernie. He was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Francis of Upper Montclair, N.J. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at the Mount Adams Cemetery, King Row, Deer Isle. Memorial contributions in David’s memory may be made to Ark Animal Shelter, P.O.
