BANGOR – Donald Clifford Horan, 83, died Feb. 28, 2007, in an Auckland, New Zealand hospital. He was born March 22, 1923, in Portland, the son of Robert Vincent and Marion (Priestly) Horan. Don was a lifelong believer in the Episcopal faith and a longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and their choir. He was a graduate of the Wesleyan University of Connecticut, earning a master’s degree in advanced international studies. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during World War II. Don enjoyed a fulfilling and dedicated career with the U.S. State Department; U.S. Information Agency; Fryeburg Academy, Fryeburg; and Maine Central Institute, Pittsfield. Don was also an avid photographer and worldwide traveler. Although Don spent the majority of his life both living and traveling to exotic, beautiful places around the world, the state of Maine remained his first and last love. He was also a member of the Masons and the Foreign Service Retired Personnel. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ellen B. (Mackie) Horan; and his sons, Robert Horan and his wife, Melinda, of Augusta, and their children, Meagan E. Dick and Christopher R. of Vasselboro, and Donald Bevington and his wife, Marisa, of Portland, Ore., and their children, Sean of London and Mateo of Portland, Ore. Donald is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Steven R. and Sydney A. Dick of Poland, Paeshance R. and Cassandra J. Horan of Vasselboro. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 225 French St., Bangor, with a reception after the service in the undercroft of the church.
