HARTLAND – Donald Hollister, 85, died June 30, 2005, at a Hartland healthcare facility. He was born Oct. 2, 1919, at St. Albans, a son of Frank and Alice (McKenney) Hollister Sr. He attended Detroit, Mich., schools and graduated from Hartland Academy. He was employed by H.C. Baxter Canning Co., was a foreman at Hartland Tanning Co., and served as Hartland Postmaster for 20 years. He served as a selectman, treasurer and trustee of the Hartland School District, and also as special officer for Hartland. He also served as a Somerset County Deputy Sheriff for 20 years, and was the recipient of Hartland’s Outstanding Citizen Award for 1983. He was an honorary member of the Hartland Fire Department. He was a member of Grace Linn United Methodist Church. Don enjoyed sports, especially hunting, fishing and spending time at his camp in North Hartland, known as the “South Forty”. In his early years, he managed and played for the Hartland Tanners baseball and basketball teams. He was a former member of the Hartland Grange, Hartland IOOF, and the Hartland-St. Albans Lions Club. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor, Jan. 2, 1995; and by his daughter, Jane Russell, Aug. 14, 1996. He is survived by a son, Peter of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; four grandchildren, Loren, Mark, Christopher, and Melissa; and a number of great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, at the Grace Linn United Methodist Church, Hartland, with the Rev. Earl Thaler, officiating. Friends may call at the church 1 p.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Hartland.
