CARIBOU – Doris peacefully passed away at her home in Presque Isle, Thursday, April 17, 2008, surrounded by her children and her friends both young and young at heart, after a long, joyful life and a short illness at age 94. She was born Feb. 3, 1914, in OxBow, the daughter of Elbridge and Alice (Murchie) Currier and married Philip W. Soucia, March 17, 1945. They lived in OxBow until moving to Caribou in 1957. Doris attended a one-room school in OxBow through the eighth grade and high school at Ricker Classical Institute, Houlton, graduating in 1931. She attended the University of Maine, graduating in 1939. Her college education was interrupted when the teacher in OxBow died in a car accident and the superintendent asked Doris to take over the position until they could locate a new teacher. She agreed and at age 19, began her career in education, during this period at OxBow many of her students were within two or three years of her age. She returned to the university and completed her degree, obtaining a bachelor’s in commercial education. Subsequently she taught in Norway, Maine, Caribou, again in OxBow, Presque Isle and at Loring Air Force Base. She retired from teaching business in 1975 from Caribou High School. She is remembered fondly as a supportive, encouraging teacher by her students from all points in her career. She picked up the nickname “Molly” in college after seeing the movie “They Just had to Get Married,” in which Zasu Pitts played the charter Molly Hull. One of Doris’ friends called her Molly and it stuck. She grew up in the Congregational Church in OxBow, which she referred to as the “Little White Church in the Wildwood.” She was a member of Caribou Unitarian Universalist Church, the Ladies Aid and later attended Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, Caribou. After retiring she and Phil traveled, and at home played cribbage with other Caribou seniors at Caribou Country Club and at Lion’s Senior Center. She and Phil were charter members of Caribou Historical Society. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Philip; and a sister, Helen Currier. She is survived by her children, the Rev. Max Soucia and his partner, Gail Harris, of Presque Isle and Jane Soucia-Sutherland and her husband, Brian, of Caribou; three special stepdaughters, Patricia Weeks of Sacramento, Calif., Phyllis Warshauer and her husband, William, of Potomac, Md., and Mary Von Bretzel and her husband, George, of St. Aug-ustine, Fla.; two grandchildren, 10 stepgrandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
