ELLSWORTH – After a long illness, Dorothy E. Jenkins, 89, died Jan. 31, 2005, at Colliers Rehab and Nursing Center. She was born in Houlton, the daughter of George H. and Mina E. (Vail) Hobbs. Her childhood and many years of her marriage were spent in Aroostook County. She maintained her affection for the county throughout her life. Dorothy taught in a one-room school in Littleton for several years before moving with her husband and children to her beloved home on the Shore Road in Ellsworth. From 1951-1974, she enriched the lives of children in Franklin and Hancock by teaching for several years in each of these communities. She was a member of the Hancock County Retired Teachers Association, the Maine Education Association, the Order of the Eastern Star No. 97 and the United Baptist Church of Ellsworth. Dot, affectionately known as “Gram” by many, loved to knit and to share her handiwork with her family and friends. Many folks have been and continue to be warmed by her gifts. Her sense of humor, zest for life and giving nature were appreciated by all who knew her. Dorothy was predeceased in 1989 by Paul, her husband of 53 years, and in 1999 by her youngest son, Gary. She is survived by her daughter, Priscilla D. Lanks and her husband, Thomas, of Lamoine and Lewisburg, Pa.; her son, Robert O. Jenkins and wife, Siga, of Scarborough; her daughter-in-law, Betty Jenkins of Glenburn; and her brother, Charles A. Hobbs and his wife, Sally, of East Millinocket. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Melanie and Richard Nickless of Gardiner, Melissa Jenkins of Cranston, R.I. and, Julie and PJ Farr of Charlotte, N.C., Paul and Kandi Jenkins of Ells-worth, Eric and Michelle Lanks of Nanuet, N.Y., Mark Lanks of Boston, Mass., Galena and David Ojiem of Scarborough, Kristen Jenkins of Baltimore, Md., Heidi and Charlie Botello of Dayton, Ohio, Wendy Parker of Holden, and Heather Blanchard of Dayton, Ohio. Additionally she is survived by many nieces, nephews; and her great-grandchildren, Charlee Danielle, Alex, Alison, Kelsey, Joshua, Alexandra, Gregory and Emma. Dot will be missed by her all her family and friends, particularly those with whom she wintered in Florida where she was queen of the shuffleboard court. Friends are invited to call 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4. Spring interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. Those who desire may make contributions in Dorothy’s memory to the United Baptist Church, Hancock Street in Ellsworth.
