HARRISBURG, PENN. – Dorothy Irene Werner, at the age of 84, passed away, July 8, 2004, as the result of a severe fall. Her children, Jack, Michael, Patrick, Jill and her granddaughter, Laura, were with Dorothy when she passed away. Raised in Maine, outside of Bangor, Dorothy Allen grew up in a large family, one of 10 children, this large family taught Dorothy the importance of sharing and generosity but also instilled in her a need to achieve and the ability to set her own course. Dorothy was a liberated woman long before it was in fashion. She went to undergraduate school at the University of Maine on a full scholarship in the late 1930s. Money was tight in those days but, as she always did, Dorothy found a way. All her life she pursued education, first with a master’s degree in English, followed by a master’s degree in psychology then, at the age of 65, when most are retiring, Dorothy earned a Ph.D. in psychology. Dorothy put this education to good use in her work with handicapped children who were the love of her life. She never stopped helping her own children, her grandchildren and those she educated, as a teacher, and school psychologist. Dorothy’s legacy to her family and all those who loved her is her exuberant spirit for living and her kindness to all. Goodbye, Mom. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Essey (Allen) of Orrington; four brothers, Raymond of Connecticut, Mansfield of Massachusetts, John of Aroostook County, and Kenneth of Orland, one sister, Mary Holmes of Bucksport, and a daughter-in-law, Fern Werner. She is survived by three sisters, Margaret Wescott and Ethel Burgess, both of Bucksport, and Carol Foss of Orland; one brother, Paul Allen of Orrington; a daughter, Jill Rosen; three sons, Jack, and his wife, Kathy, Mike, and Patrick; five grandchildren, Laura Werner, Jack Werner, Megan Werner, Max Rosen and Josh Rosen, many nephews, nieces and cousins. A memorial service will be held 12 noon, Aug. 26, at St Joseph Church, North Brewer.
