WATERVILLE – Earl I. Mullen, 83, husband of Alice Mullen, of Waterville, died April 27, 2004, in Waterville, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 20, 1920, in Presque Isle, the son of Clinton I. and Lydia (Smith) Mullen. He was educated at Easton public schools, and was a graduate of Husson College. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1946. He received a BA degree from the University of Maine in 1949, and graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University in 1959. His 40-year banking career began with the Eastern Trust and Banking Company in Bangor in 1949, where he became a senior officer. In 1970 he joined the Federal Trust Company in Waterville as president and CEO, and was, at the time of his retirement, executive vice president and director of the Merrill Bankshares Company. He was also an advisory Board member of Fleet Bank of Maine. He served as President of the Maine Bankers Association, and was a former state vice president for the American Bankers Association, and a member of the ABA Council. He was a member of the Bank Management Institute, and also served as an instructor for The American Institute of Banking. He was a past member of the University of Maine Foundation, and a past director and president of the Development Credit Corp. of Maine. He was a member of The Waterville Rotary Club, Waterville Country Club, past president and secretary of the Bangor Lions Club, and a member of the Bangor Poets Club. He was a long-term board member and past board chair of the Mid Maine Medical Center. He was a former Trustee of the First Congregational Church of Waterville, and a former trustee of the Maine Conference, U.C.C. He also served as a member, director, or trustee of a number of other business, civic, and charitable organizations. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Evelyn (Mullen) Wilson; and a brother, Arnold Mullen. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alice (Ramsdell) Mullen of Waterville; a son, James Mullen and his wife, Linda, of Bangor; a daughter, Judith Rowe and her husband, James, of Cape Elizabeth; granddaughters, Sarah and Katherine Mullen of Bangor; grandsons, Andrew and Thomas Rowe of Cape Elizabeth; and a brother, Paul Mullen of Presque Isle. The family would like to especially thank all of the medical personnel on 3 North at the Thayer Unit of Maine General Medical Center for their compassionate care. Memorial visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday April 30, 2004, at Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville, ME. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, at First Congregational Church, Eustis Parkway, Waterville. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pine Tree Society, 149 Front St., Bath, ME 04530, or to a charity of one’s choice.
