MOUNT DESERT – Edgar P. Gwynn, 83, died March 27, 2006, in Ellsworth, after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 23, 1923, in Baltimore, Md., the son of Edgar P. and Lily (Beam) Gwynn Sr. Edgar developed an abiding fascination with the natural world and its inhabitants. After service in Germany, during World War II, Dr. Gwynn obtained degrees from the University of Maryland, where he met his wife, Bettie Anne, the University of Kentucky and John Hopkins University. He served as faculty member and department chair in biology at Washington College, Chestertown, Md. for more than three decades, teaching courses in botany, development, ecology, genetics and zoology. Edgar moved with his wife to Mount Desert in 1995. He is survived by his daughter, Babette of Bar Harbor; a brother and sister-in-law of Baltimore, numerous friends of whom he was very fond, including, Jane Barker and Cindy Smith and legions of former students, some of whom remain in touch. He was predeceased by his wife in 2004. No services are planned at this time. Contributions in Edgar’s memory may be made to the West Side Food Pantry, P.O.
