MOUNT DESERT – Elizabeth “Betty” May (Wescott) Swan Blanchard, 79, died April 3, 2007, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born May 5, 1927, in Seal Harbor, the daughter of Herman Lyle Sr. and Florence (Ford) Wescott. She attended Dunham Grammar School, Seal Harbor and graduated from Gilman High School, 1946, Northeast Harbor. Betty was a member of the Union Church, the Band Boosters Club at the Mount Desert High School, The Girl’s Friendly Society, The Girl Scouts, a past noble grand of Rebecca Lodge and a Girl Scout leader of Troop 113, all of Northeast Harbor. She was also a member of the Mount Desert Women’s Literary Group. She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Sprague of Bath and Christie Swan-Goble of Bass Harbor; stepson and daughter-in-law, David P. and Meg (Smallidge) Blanchard of Beech Hill; his siblings, Dennis and Terry Blanchard of Mount Desert, Bill Blanchard of Northeast Harbor and Rosemary Brady of Illinois; two grandsons, Shannon E. Sprague of Bath and Michael W. Sprague and wife, Rachel, of Augusta; two granddaughters, Erin M. Swan and fianc?, Robert Williams of Ellsworth and Shyrle (Goble) Applegate and husband, Darren, of Bangor; three great-grandsons, Michael T.J. Sockbeson of Standish, Connor J. Sprague of Portland and Zedakiah M. Sprague of Augusta; a great-granddaughter, Jemilee E. Williams of Ellsworth; sister-in-law, Jeanne L. Wescott of Seal Harbor; several nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her beloved first husband, Shannon E. Swan of Northeast Harbor; second husband, Maynard D. Blanchard of Beech Hill; daughter, Sharon Swan-McDonald; brothers, Herman “Bud” L. Wescott Jr. and M. Lawrence “Larry” Wescott; sisters, Dorothy “Dot” (Wescott) Higgins and Carolyn “Cal” (Wescott) Cameron; a great-granddaughter, Zalena J. Sprague; special niece and nephew, Nancy (Higgins) Harrington and W. William “Bill” Higgins; and a great-nephew, John J. Polchies Jr. She was also predeceased by Diane (Blanchard) McNaughton. Friends are invited to call 4:30-6 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Buchanan officiating. Spring interment will be in the family lot at Seal Harbor Cemetery.
