CARIBOU – Elizabeth Anne Curless Brown, 96, wife of the late Herbert M. Brown, died Dec. 9, 2006, in Caribou. She was born March 8, 1910, in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of William and Eara (White) Curless. She was a graduate of Fort Fairfield High School as well as Cary Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Brown was a registered nurse, specializing in home nursing in the Caribou area for many years and also served as secretary of the Cary Hospital Board of Directors. She married Herbert Brown Aug. 9, 1932. Elizabeth was a longtime active member of the Bessie Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was very active in numerous church groups and committees including the United Methodist Women’s Group, the Jenny Lyons Circle, the Administrative Council, The Fortnight Bible Class and numerous Bible studies. Mr. and Mrs. Brown enjoyed square dancing and were members of several square dance clubs as well as teaching lessons for more than 40 years. Mrs. Brown was active in the Caribou Grange, Elizabeth Chapter 108 Order of Eastern Star, The Caribou Literary Club, the Caribou Republican Party and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and also served as an American Red Cross instructor. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Sarah Carol Brown of Dudley, N.C.; and her daughter, Mary Lou Brown of Caribou; two granddaughters, Donna Gummere and her husband, Robert, of Niceville, Fla., and Leslie Williams and her husband, Jeffery, of Pikeville, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Chance Williams, Shannon Ely and her husband, Michael, Janie Gummere and Jodi Sites and her husband, Micah; five great-great-grandchildren, Wesley and Emma Sites, Katelyn Gummere, Isabella and Mia Ely; many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her husband, Herbert; nine sisters, Mildred McLaughlin, Marion Rasmussen, Stella Moreau, Dorothy Curless, Helen Brown, Kathleen Benson, Ruth DeMerchant, Phyllis Daily and Ethel Weir; two brothers, Charles and Philip Curless. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou, where evening Eastern Star services will be conducted 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, from the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anna Beech officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Mrs. Brown may do so through the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
