HERMON – Elmer G. Wing, 77, of Hermon, died peacefully Oct. 4, 2003, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 23, 1926, in Gardiner, the son of Edwina Knox Wing and Kenneth Wing. Elmer graduated in 1944 from Gardiner High School where he was an outstanding athlete. He was captain of the football and baseball teams and was an avid hockey player. The day after graduating from high school, Elmer went into the U.S. Navy. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. During the Korean War, he served on the USS Boxer as a fire control man. He also served on the cruiser Chicago. Elmer worked for 39 years for the New England Telephone Company, starting out as a cable splicer helper in 1946. He retired in 1985, holding the position of District Manager of Engineering and Construction for northeast Maine. Throughout his life, Elmer loved all sports. He was a Little League baseball coach when his children were young. Later, as a grandfather, he never missed one of his grandchildren’s games. He also helped build many of the playgrounds in the Brewer area. After retiring, Elmer joined the Telephone Pioneers which helped underprivileged children. He volunteered many hours for the Habitat for Humanities organization. Elmer loved to dance. He and his beloved wife, Irene, danced at least two nights a week, even to the last. He had been to a dance with his “dancing shoes on” the night before he became ill. Elmer’s other interests included woodworking, reading, and family. He enjoyed building many wonderful pieces of furniture for his family and read many an exciting novel from books borrowed from the Brewer Public Library. Most of all however, he enjoyed being with his loving family, especially his very special grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Elmer was predeceased by a sister, Iva Santerre; sister, Lucy Warren; and a brother, Kenneth Wing. Elmer is survived by his wife, Irene Weston Wing of Hermon; sons, David Wing and his wife, Kris, of Greene, Daniel Wing and his wife, Belinda, of Brewer; and daughter, Nancy Wing and her husband, Thomas, of Bangor; grandchildren, Joshua and Erin Wing, Scott and Brian Lever and Timothy, Rick and Olivia Wing; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express appreciation to the Eastern Maine Medical Center staff for the care and consideration given to Elmer during his illness. Friends may call 4-6 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 754 Ohio St., Bangor, with the Rev. Thomas Lequin, pastor, presider. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments following the services at the residence of Dr. Thomas and Nancy Lever, 139 Norway Road, Bangor. Private interment will be in Farmingdale Cemetery.
