ALBANY, N.Y. – Emil F. Hawes, 88, was called home to be with the Lord March 2, 2006, after a short illness at the Albany County Nursing Home, Albany, N.Y. He was born Nov. 19, 1917, in Dexter, the son of Howard A. and Emma M. (Stevens) Hawes. Emil grew up in central Maine and was a 1935 graduate of Bangor High School. In 1940, he earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Maine and was an honor graduate of the ROTC, entering the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant. In 1941, he married Esther Kathleen (Kay) DuPlessis of Milford. Throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s, they raised three children as a military officer’s family, traveling all over the world. After his military career ended in 1956, with the rank of major in the U.S. Air Force, Emil was employed in several occupations in the Northeast including pilot, teacher, musician, civil engineer, carpenter, and surveyor before finally retiring in 1982. In later life, Emil’s interest in Christian Evangelical studies led him to attend the Masters College in California in 1994. He was predeceased by his wife in 1973 and is survived by three children, Emil Jr. of Reseda, Calif., Carole Valdata of North Brunswick, N.J. and Armand J. (John) of Averill Park, N.Y. In addition, he is survived by nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. After a private ceremony, interment will be at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
