HOULTON – Hope York passed away June 1, 2004, at a local hospital. She was born July 3, 1929, at Debec, New Brunswick, the daughter of Edwin and Faye (Thompson) Fleming. Hope graduated from Ricker Classical Institute, as salutatorian, Class of 1947. In 1948, she married her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, Gerard A. York. Hope was very active in community organizations. She was a member of the Houlton United Methodist Church, the Ebbett Circle and the United Methodist Women; she belonged to the Young Mothers’ Club, the Chat-A-While Club and bowled at the Dux Club and the Elks Club. She owned and operated York’s Dairy Bar for 23 years, belonged to the Houlton Flying Club and was a licensed pilot. Other activities included Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary, Houlton Community Golf Club, Meduxnekeag Ramblers, Friends and Needles Quilting Guild and the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days. Her favorite pastimes consisted of playing bridge, golfing, gardening, going to camp and attending grandchildren’s performances and games. She will be remembered for her incredible ability to accept all people and to enjoy life’s gifts. She was a good sport. Hope leaves behind her husband, Gerard; four children, Dick York and his wife, Susan, Nancy Putnam and her husband, Albert, Jerry York and his wife, Jane, Dawn Matthews and her husband, Bob; 17 grandchildren, Emily, Jessica, Alison, Ellen, Margaret, Martha, Jamie, Albert III, David, Claire, Collin, Eben, Lowell, Erin, Mark, Rebecca and Zachary; four great-grandchildren, Catherine, Sabra, Albert IV and Jada; two sisters, Anna Leland, Marilyn Lloyd; one brother, John Fleming; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Dunn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the Houlton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Pat MacHugh officiating. Interment will be in the Ludlow Cemetery.
