EXETER – Floyd Rufus Whitcomb, 80, died Nov. 28, 2005, at his home. He was born Aug. 26, 1925, in Newburgh, the son of Howard and Doris (Tasker) Whitcomb. Floyd served in the 277th Engineering Combat Battalion in the European Theater of Operation during World War II. He was the former owner and operator of Whitcomb’s Motel in Brewer and was an avid outdoorsman and farmer after his retirement. Floyd loved snowmobiling and was a member of the Maine Snowmobile Association, he held positions of I.T.S. trail coordinator, director of the National Snowmobile Foundation, was inducted into the M.S.A. “Hall of Fame” in 1999, was M.S.A. fund-raising chairman and a member of the Iron Dog Brigade, an honorary society dedicated to the fun of snowmobiling and was scholarship chairman for the Northeast Chapter I.S.C. program. Floyd was also very active in the Pine Tree Camp for handicapped children and was inducted into their “Hall of Fame.” Surviving are his wife, Marguerite of Exeter; one brother, Paul of Brewer; sons, Russell and Joyce of San Jose, Calif., Lawrence and Rose of Manteca, Calif., Brian H. and Kathy of Dedham, Dana and Jenny of Mesula Park, N.M.; daughter, Sandra Kennett of Zephyrhills, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister and three brothers. Friends are welcome to call 10 a.m. until time of services Friday, Dec. 2, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., following the service Friday.
