CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. and BANGOR – Francis C. “Frank” Herbert, beloved husband of Pat Herbert, passed away March 6, 2004, at the Cape Canaveral Hospital in Florida after a brief illness. He attended the Abraham Lincoln Grammar School and Garland Street Junior High in Bangor. He will be remembered as an outstanding athlete at John Bapst High School in Bangor and the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. While at John Bapst High he was the quarterback of the state championship football team in 1946, he did not play in 1948 after an appendectomy but returned to quarterback the 1948 football team that also went undefeated. (He never played on a losing football team while at John Bapst High School.) Frank was also an outstanding catcher on the John Bapst baseball teams of that era and led them to the Eastern Maine Championship in 1949. At the Maine Maritime Academy he continued to excel in both football and baseball and was co-captain of the football team in 1952, which was his senior year. He also won the batting championship on the baseball team that same year. Upon graduation he served with distinction as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. After his discharge, he made a career in the Merchant Marine rising to rank of chief engineer. Frank was a member of the Brotherhood of Marine Engineers from 1954 until his retirement in 1988. He was active in the alumni association of John Bapst High School and the Maine Maritime Academy, and will be missed by his many high school and college friends. He will be remembered as an easy going loyal individual accepting what life handed him and did his best without complaint. He loved the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Frank is survived by his wife; three brothers, Thomas J. Herbert of Ponta Vedra, Fla., Bentley J. Herbert of Cape Neddick, Michael W. Herbert of Holden; two sisters, Mona E. Trafton of Levant, Mary L. Hall of Cape Canaveral, Fla. and Bangor. He is also survived by five stepchildren; several grand-children; great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, who are scattered throughout the country. There will be a memorial service 3 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at the Shorewood Community Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. There will also be a memorial service to celebrate his life in Bangor at a future date to be announced.
