CORINTH – Frank Hopkins Cande, 86, died Nov. 30, 2007, at Sunbridge Care and Rehab, Wolfeboro, N.H. He was born July 3, 1921, in Dalton, Mass., son of the late Donald and Dorothy (Nelson) Cande, and was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Bradbury) Cande, who died in 1991. Frank attended Alfred University in New York. He later joined the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and ser-ved as an aerial gunnery instructor at Bainbridge, Maryland, from 1943 to 1946. Once discharged, Mr. Cande worked as a soil conservation specialist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 20 years. After his work in soil conservation and after a brief stint as director of public works for the towns of Lincoln, and Holliston, Mass., Mr. Cande began a second career in the hospitality industry in 1970. Over the next 20 years, he and his wife, Betty, managed hotel and motel properties across the Northeast, finally settling in the Bangor in the 1980s. In 1993 Frank retired from the hospitality industry and began part-time work at Bangor International Airport. While at the airport, he helped to coordinate welcoming committees for thousands of service men and women returning to U.S. soil from active duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. Mr. Cande was a member of many organizations, but most notably an active lifetime member of Kiwanis. He had the honor of serving as lieutenant governor of the 25th Division of Kiwanis’ New England District from 1985 to 1986. He was also active with the Boy Scouts of America and many local youth and church groups. He was passionate about politics, community, family and civil service, and will deeply missed by all that knew him. His survivors include two sons, James R. Cande of Moultonborough, N.H., and Richard H. Cande of Lancaster, Mass.; a brother and two sisters, Nelson Cande, Mary Alice Fox and Sally Ann Barber; his grandchildren, Holly Erwin, Jennifer Pieroni, Benjamin Cande and Emily Cande; and a great-grandson, Benjamin R. Cande. He was also the brother of the late John Cande. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Badger Funeral Home, 347 King St., Littleton, Mass. Visiting hours will be held 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Dr. Franklin Perkins School, 971 Main St., Lancaster, MA 01523.
