ROCKPORT – Frederick Boulter McAlary Sr., 82, husband of Josephine Pitts McAlary, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at his home. He was born Aug. 4, 1921, in Waterville, and was the son of Frederick Dole and Genevieve (Boulter) McAlary. Fred was educated in Waterville schools, and graduated from Waterville Senior High School. He was an honors graduate of Colby College. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater participating in five campaigns, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Much of his service was with the 80th “Blue Ridge” Infantry Division. Following discharge from military service, Fred joined the advertising staff of the Bangor Daily News as a Retail Advertising Salesman. During his 40-years with the News, he held the positions of assistant advertising manager, retail advertising manager, and as department head, advertising manager. While living in Bangor for 40 years, Fred was active in community activities including co-president with his wife, Jo of the Fairmont School and Fifth Street Junior High PTA, a 31 year member of the Bangor Lions Club, where he served a term as cabinet Secretary-Treasurer of International District 42-0. He received a Lion’s Award of Merit or his development of the Bangor Lions Club Volunteer Recognition Program. Fred was active in the Bangor YMCA and United Way fund drives and served as a high school swim meet official and Cub Scout leader. He was very interested in the Dale Carnegie program and served as program director of the Bangor Area Sales and Marketing Executive Club. He was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he also served as lay reader, church school supervisor and was a member of the vestry. Fred’s professional membership included the New England Advertising Executive Association and the industry wide newspaper Bureau of Advertising. In 1985, he retired and enjoyed travelling with his wife in the states and abroad. They spent winters in the south and summers north living in Jo’s family home in Rockport. In 1994, they resided year round in Rockport. He was a communicant of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rockland. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Josephine Pitts McAlary of Rockport; a daughter, Diana Hicks and her husband, Anthony, of York, Pa.; a son, Frederick B. McAlary Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Andover, Mass.; grandchildren, Andy L. Hicks and his wife, Karen, and their children, Andrew, Kelly, Amelia, and Kyle of Exon, Pa.; Jennifer Hicks and her husband, Thomas Briggs, of Takoma Park, Md.; Ryan W. McAlary of Andover, Mass.; one brother, Eugene A. McAlary of Yarmouth, Mass.; one sister, Ann McAlary Sevrens and her husband, Robert, of Centerville, Mass. The family wants to particularly thank Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice for their loving, helpful care, especially Susan, Frank, Cheryl, Sylvia, Regina and April, as well as all of the other members of the group that have been so supportive. The members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, especially the Rev. Ralph Moore, Sheila Seekins and Midge Welch have given us such hope in these difficult times. A Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Rockland, with the Rev. Ralph Moore officiating. There will be a reception immediately following at the church.
