SEARSMONT – Frederick R. Cross, 86, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at a Belfast Hospital. Born Oct. 6, 1917, in Morrill, he was the son of Harold and Lottie (Batch elder) Cross. He had worked as a surveyor for the state, and was a lifelong farmer, raising poultry and operating a dairy farm in Searsmont. In his later years he raised vegetables which he sold to the public. For this he received awards at the local fairs. Fred was an avid fisherman and hunter. He served the town of Searsmont over the years as selectman, road commissioner, constable and animal control officer. He was a founding member of the Tri-Town Snowmobile Club. A member of Quanibacook Lodge, A.F.&A.M., and the St George Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons. He was a member of the Belfast Investment Club and Honesty Grange of Morrill. Frederick and his wife attended the Morrill Baptist Church and also the Searsmont Methodist Church, where they were members of the couples Club. He was predeceased by one sister, Frances Fuller. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn (Ellis) Cross; his children, Fred and Jean Cross of Salem, N.H., Lois and Karl Piepho of West Springfield, Mass., and Bonnie and John Staples of Swanville. Frederick is also survived by two brothers, Keith Cross of Morrill, Edwin Cross of Brooks, and Joyce Wakefield of Grantham, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday March 25, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 26, at Rackliffe Funeral Home, 54 Church St., Belfast, with the Rev. John Barbor officiating.
