BANGOR – George H. Furbush, passed away Oct. 20, 2006. George was born and raised in Berwick, Nov. 11, 1928. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age 17 in 1945 and served our country during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. George was awarded several medals and accommodations for his military service, including the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross for valor and heroic conduct in combat. George retired from the U.S. Navy in 1967 after 21 years of service. He went on to graduate from the Sunset School of Preaching, Lubbock, Texas in 1972 and graduated from the Sunset School of Missions, Lubbock, Texas in 1973. George served as a minister for the Church of Christ from 1973 until 1988 in Rhode Island, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Bangor, where he retired. In retirement, George worked at Ross Manor, Bangor until 2003. He also served as a member of the VFW Post 4917, Brewer and served as post commander from 2000 to 2002. George will be deeply missed by all those who knew him and the friends, family, children, grandchildren and wife, Grace of Bangor, he has left behind. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dana Douglas, pastor of the Dedham Congregational Church, officiating. Committal services, with military honors will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Those wishing to express their gratitude for his service, and in memory of his remarkable life, are encouraged to make a contribution in lieu of sending flowers to his VFW Post at VFW Post 4917, 265 Center St., Brewer, ME 04412, in George’s honor so they may continue their on going community service work. “We know George, our father and friend, is well in the presence of our Lord.” Isaiah 40:31
