GRACE (CHURCH) SMART JONESPORT – Grace (Church) Smart, 93, died at a Machias hospital on Jan. 15, 2004, with her family at her side. She was born March 21, 1910, at Jonesport, the daughter of Harris and Gracie (Kent) Church. Following the death of her mother shortly after her birth she was raised by her grandparents Adeline and Thomas C. Kent. At the age of 14, her grandmother died and Grace moved to Portland to live with her aunt and uncle Velma and Harvey Dunning. Grace graduated from Portland High School in 1928, and received her teachers certificate from the Gorham Normal School in 1930. Shortly after her graduation she married her husband, Perry Smart. The two of them moved to Winthrop, Mass., where Perry worked as a teacher. Later on they moved to Connecticut, where she taught sixth grade for 17 years in the Berlin School System. While in Connecticut, she received her bachelor’s degree from the Central Connecticut Teachers College and was active in her community through the Kensington Congregational Church, the Monday Night Club, Cub Scouts and the PTA. In 1967, they retired to her hometown of Jonesport. There she was an active member of the Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church, where she served as the church historian and was the greeter and “official” hugger as well as a member of the Ladies Aid and Parsonage Society. Grace was a devoted Christian leading her life by words of 1st Corinthians, “The greatest of these is love.” Everyone who knew her knows how much love she had to share. She had many special people she held dear, too numerous to mention. Each one of you know who you are, as she never hesitated to show how much she cared. She always reached out to people no matter where she was, passing out those special hugs. Grace will be missed by her beloved family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra and her husband, Lawrence Moffett, of Jonesport; her daughter-in-law, Marion Smart of Wallingford, Conn.; her special sister-in-law, Shirley Dunning of Jonesport; her grandchildren, Pamela (Smart) Camire and her husband, Arnold, and their daughter, Samantha, of Meriden, Conn.; Perry Smart III and his wife, Sally, and their daughter, Mackenzie, of Middletown, Conn.; Daniel Moffett and his wife, Melissa, and their children, Daniel and Kyle of Ft. Gibson, Okla.; Katherine (Moffett) and her husband, James Johnston, and their son, Neil and her stepdaughter, Nichole, of Orrington; and Melissa Moffett and her daughters, Grace and Megan of Jonesport; a special nephew, Harvey Dunning and his wife, Jean, and their children, Heather and Jonathan of Cromwell, Conn.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Perry Smart, in 1993; and by her son, Perry Smart II on Dec. 19, 2003. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias.
