BUCKSPORT – Harold C. Perkins Jr., 71, died June 1, 2007, after heart surgery, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Nov. 1, 1935, in Blue Hill, son of Harold C. and Madeline (Cunningham) Perkins Sr. Harold graduated from Bucksport High School in 1953 and was looking forward to attending the class reunion again this summer. Harold owned and operated The Gateway Emporium, Bucksport, along with his wife, Alayne, which was their pride and joy for 20 years, retiring in 1998. He was very outgoing and after his retirement he enjoyed staying in touch with friends and former customers. Always a hard worker, prior to starting The Gateway Emporium, he served in the U.S. Army, worked for Rudman Beverage Co., Brewer, and for Webber Tanks, Bucksport, for many years. He enjoyed his camp on Toddy Pond, gardening, feeding the birds and squirrels and spending time with his grandchildren. Harold is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alayne (Gray) Perkins of Bucksport; son, Brad Perkins and his partner, Hugh Smith, of Durham and Bar Harbor; son, Chris Perkins and his wife, Shirley, of Pittsfield, Mass.; three grandchildren, Michael, Heather and Kimberly Perkins, also of Pittsfield, Mass.; sister, Cynthia Manuel and her husband, Chet, of Skowhegan; two nephews, Mark Manuel of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Patrick Manuel of Topsham; aunt, Connie Harper of Bangor; sister-in-law, Avis Barker of Orland; many cousins, including special cousin, Eleanor Clark of Milltown. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Linwood and Isadora Gray; two brothers-in-law, John Gray and Robert Gray. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery, Bucksport. Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
