BELFAST – Harold Robert Carter, 77, passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2004, at a local healthcare facility. He was born on Sept. 28, 1926, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of Harold H. and Hazel (Clifford) Carter. Harold served with the U.S. Navy and was a plankowner of the USS Antietam World War II and Korea. Harold attended the Longfellow School, and Rindge Tech both in Cambridge, Mass., then he went on to Suffolk University and Northeastern University both in Boston, and then graduated from the Northeastern University School of Law. He was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1954, and the Maine Bar in 1982. Harold received the Pro Bono Publico Award from the Maine Bar Foundation in every year from 1996-2001, for the most Pro Bono cases accepted in Waldo County. He was a member of the Mason’s in Massachusetts and Maine as well as being a Shriner, and a member of the Cornerstone Lodge in Duxbury, Mass. Harold was predeceased by his granddaughter, Karen; two brothers, Frank B. and William H. Carter; and a stepdaughter, Joyce V. Eicher. Harold is survived by his wife, Vertene Carter of Belfast; his children, Charles W. H. Carter of Northport, Robert H. Carter and his wife, Barbara, of Winterport Diane H. Carter of Winthrop, Mass., Judith A. Carter of Mt. Holly, N.C., and Carol Brown and her husband, Stephen, of Sharon, Mass.; grandchildren, Jessica, Christopher, Amanda, Diane, David and Cheryl; stepchildren, David Sullivan and his wife, Sandra, of Bristol, R.I., Steven Sullivan and his wife, Carol, of Exeter, N.H., and Nancy DeRedin and her husband, Grafton, of Wiscasset; stepgrandchildren, Zachary, Ryan, Emily, Alexandra, Thomas, Toby and Jaimee. Graveside funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday, June 2, at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.
