LIMESTONE and ST. FRANCIS – Harry Edward Taggett, 88, husband of the late Sarah E. Taggett, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 1, 2005, at a Caribou nursing facility after a brief illness. He was born June 3, 1916, at St. Francis, the son of Hazen and Sarah (Hafford) Taggett. Harry was educated in the Allagash school system and served in the United States Army during World War II in Company C 19th Infantry and was present during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. He was also engaged in active duty in New Guinea, southern Philippines and other locations in the central Pacific, having served 39 months of combat without a break in service. Harry earned many metals and accommodations, including the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon, the Ribbon for Good Conduct, Efficiency, Honor and Fidelity, a Ribbon for Heroic or Meritorious Achievement, the American Defense Ribbon given by proclamation of the President on May 27, 1941, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars. He was honorably discharged from the Army in July of 1945, having earned the rank of Private First Class. Harry was married to Sarah Hafford on June 25, 1946, and attended the High Street Baptist Church, Limestone. He had been employed for many years in the farming and logging industries and had also worked at the former A & P Processing Plant, Fort Fairfield, for several years. Mr. Taggett was a member of the VFW Lister-Knowlton, Post No. 9389, Caribou and the American Legion, Obar-Phair Post No. 127, Limestone. In addition to his parents, Harry was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Taggett, on April 18, 1989; two sons, Archie and Frank Taggett; one step-son, Charles E. Hafford; three brothers, Robert, Archie and Frank Taggett; three sisters, Mary Duperry, Maggie Taggett and Verdie Haney. He is survived by eight sons, Irvan D. Taggett of Calais, Harry A. “Pete” Taggett of Caribou, John Taggett of Limestone, Hazen Taggett and his wife, Patsy, of Mapleton, Ralph Taggett and his wife, Bonnie, of Fort Fairfield, Patrick Taggett, Paul Taggett and his wife, Betty, Cyrus Taggett, all of Limestone; three daughters, Sarah Johnson of Caribou and special friend, Melvin Cleaves, of Easton, Elizabeth Denslow and her husband, Robert, of Limestone, Phyllis Brown and her husband, John, of Kennesaw, Ga.; forty-six grandchildren; fifty-four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at the Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where a service of remembrance will be conducted at 7 p.m. by officers and members of the VFW Lister-Knowlton Post No. 9389, Caribou. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at the High Street Baptist Church, 74 High St., Limestone, with the Pastor Charles Campbell officiating. Friends may call at the Church 10-11 a.m. Interment with military honors will take place at the Webster Cemetery, Limestone, later in the spring. A time of fellowship will be held at the High Street Baptist Church immediately after the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Taggett may be given to the Maine Veterans’ Home, 169 Van Buren Road, Caribou, ME 04736, or to the American Diabetes Association, Portland Maine Office, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101.
