COREA – Harvey L. Crowley, 70, passed away on Sept. 29, 2003, at his home in Corea, surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 9, 1933, on Beals, the son of Lindell and Louisa (Backman) Crowley. Harvey graduated from Beals High School, Class of 1953. He was particularly proud that he was a member of two of the State Championship basketball teams from that very small school. After high school, he served with distinction in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Harvey was a lifelong fisherman, having started lobster fishing at the age of 8 with his mother as his “sternman.” He was a vocal advocate for fishermen and the fishing industry and, over the years, frequently testified during legislative hearings on their behalf. Harvey had served as President of the Corea Lobster Co-op and President and Vice-President of the Downeast Lobstermen’s Association. He was also a member of the Winter Harbor Lodge No. 192 AF & AM and the Anah Shrine in Bangor, where he participated in the Shrine Lobster Boat Unit, having designed and built the first miniature lobster boat for the unit, as well as the Scottish Rite Consistory in the Valley of Portland, and the Scottish Rite Lodge Council Chapter in the Valley of Bangor. Harvey was an avid sportsman and athlete who loved to hunt and fish. He played basketball for many years on various town teams and also coached many local youth teams. Harvey played softball in the Ellsworth Softball League as a pitcher and player-coach from 1973-1987, not retiring until he was in his 50s. He was a fierce competitor at the lobster boat races at various Downeast locales and was always trying to find ways to improve the performance of his lobster boat, the Sally Ann. He is survived by his wife, Sally A. Crowley; his daughters Patty M. Carter and her husband, Howard, of Newport News, Va., and her mother, Mildred S. Crowley of Birch Harbor, and Danielle L. Crowley of Corea; his stepchildren whom he thought of as his own, Elizabeth A. Humery of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jerome C. Humery of West Hills, Calif.; his grandchildren, Frank L. Miller Jr. of Birch Harbor, and Rachel A. Miller of Ellsworth; his beloved sister, Alverda M. Beal and her husband, Stanley C. Beal, of Beals; and his brother, Larry N. Crowley and companion, Lisa M. Look, of Beals; one uncle, Herman “Junior” Backman and his wife, Norma, of Beals; one aunt, Rebecca Graves of Wallaston, Mass.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Lindell on April 4, 1968; and his mother, Louisa on March 23, 1992. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at the Gouldsboro Methodist Church, Old Route 1, Westbay, with Rev. Billy Renwick officiating.
