MACHIAS – Helen Maud (Rogers) Winslow, 106, died July 10, 2006. She was born Sept. 8, 1899, in Jonesport, the daughter of the late Cora Bell (Hall) Rogers and William Enos Rogers. Helen was also affectionately known as “Mum,” “Ulla,” “Garligar,” and “Gug.” Mum died surrounded by the loving hands of her family as well as the caregivers at Marshall Care Center where she received outstanding care and abundant love for the past seven years. Mum was a graduate of Jonesport High School in 1919, Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, in 1922, and Washington State Normal School in 1953. Her teaching career spanned many years, correlating with events in her life. She taught children in grades six through 12 in schools including Jonesboro, Lubec, Kansas City, Machias, East Machias and retired from Mansfield, Mass. She was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ and particularly enjoyed teaching adult classes. She devoted much of her time to “My Ginnie” and the rest of her family. Mum is survived by me, Virginia Dale (Winslow) Whitney and my husband, Dale, whom she adored; three grandchildren, Helen “Hedy” Ardito and husband, Greg, of Pipersville, Pa., Elizabeth “Lilibet” Stanke and husband, Mark, of Lee’s Summit, Mo. and David Whitney and wife, Holly, of Marshfield; six great-grandchildren, Brooke Whitney and Alec Winslow Stanke, Shane Whitney Ardito, Michon Dale, Coleton Winslow and Ashton Greenleaf Whitney; eight nieces and nephews; special cousins and many dear friends. She was predeceased by my father, Dr. Dale E. Winslow; my sister, Ethelyn Jean; her brother, Russell; her two sisters, Ethelyn and Georgia; and many good life long friends. There will be a service of love and remembrance 1 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at the Community of Christ, North Street, Machias.
