SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Hilda R. Marvin, 86, wife of the late Vale G. Marvin, died peacefully at her home with family and caregivers at her side May 29, 2005, after a lengthy illness. She was born March 19, 1919, in Bangor, to George and Muriel O. Rowe. Hilda graduated from Bangor High School and the University of Maine, Class of 1941. Following College she worked as an assistant buyer at Filene’s Department Store in Boston. During her stay in Boston she met Vale and they were married in 1945. She moved back to Maine in 1945 with Vale shortly thereafter, settling in Hampden, where they lived until 1968 when they moved to Southwest Harbor. Hilda was very involved in community affairs and activities. Hilda served for several years as local chairperson for the annual crippled children Easter Seal Drive. She was an active member of the Bangor Junior League and Shakespeare Club. Hilda was an active skier and avid sailor. She and Vale cruised extensively in Canadian, New England and Caribbean waters on a variety of ailing yachts. Hilda was a lady of many talents and hobbies. She was an accomplished seamstress and tailor and she taught tailoring classes. She enjoyed gardening, painting, carving birds, hooking rugs, refinishing furniture and she was superb at various types of needlework. One of her greatest loves was varnishing bright work on yachts and she was recognized as a leading expert in this field. Hilda is survived by her sister, Catharine L. Rowe of Southwest Harbor and Bangor; a daughter, Patricia M. Flynn and her husband, Bill, of Southwest Harbor; a son, Captain George F. Marvin USN/ Retired and his wife, Nancy, also of Southwest Harbor; a grandson, Christopher M. McIsaac and his wife, Stefni and great-grandson, Christopher W. McIsaac, all of Naples, Fla. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at the Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, Main Street, Mt Desert, with a memorial service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials in Hilda’s name may be made to the Wendell Gilley Museum, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.
