HAMPDEN – James “Jay” Joseph Chesley Costelloe, 42, died June 15, 2007, after a lengthy illness. He was born July 1, 1964, in Port Hueneme, Calif., to John and Lillian (Lord) Costello. James graduated in 1982 from Greeley High School, Yarmouth, and graduated in 1984 from Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute, with a degree in design engineering. He worked at Southworth, Portland, then moved back to California. Jay worked for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, first as a sheriff service technician and later as a sheriff’s deputy, after he graduated from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Academy. He and his wife, Linda, moved to Hampden in 1995 and he became a wildlife rehabilitator, until he was forced to quit due to illness. Jay loved nature and working with animals and people. He also enjoyed cooking and entertaining. Jay was kind and caring. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. Jay is survived by his wife of 14 years, Linda Cooper Costelloe of Hampden; and his father, John Costello of Bakers-field, Calif.; his adoptive parents, Paul and Betty Chesley of Cumberland; his brothers, David Wasserman of Bakers-field, Calif., Henry Wasserman of Pompano Beach, Fla., Christopher Chesley of Fayetteville, N.C., Andy Chesley of Cumberland, Adam Chesley and his wife, Jillyenne, of Waterboro, John Patrick Costello and his wife, Robin, of Manassas, Va., and Michael Costello and his wife, Odile, of La Jolla, Calif.; three sisters, Patricia Wasserman of Bakersfield, Calif., Alissa Towle and her husband, Mike, of Cumberland and Sharon Formanek and her husband, Bill, of Glendale, Ariz.; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 18, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hamp-den. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Hampden Congregational Church, Main Road North, Hampden, with the Rev. Dr. Deborah M. Jenks officiating. Interment will be after the funeral service at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jay’s memory may be made to Hampden Congregational Church, P.O.
