LAS CRUCES, N.M. and EAST MACHIAS – James Milton Ashley, 80, formerly of East Machias, died July 26, 2003, in Las Cruces, N.M. Born to John H. and Adrith (Randall) Ashley on July 21, 1923, he graduated valedictorian of Washington Academy in 1940. He earned his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Michigan while serving in the Naval ROTC program. He was employed 39 years with Blackmer Pump Co. in Grand Rapids, Mich. Jim was married to Marie D. (Holmes) of Grand Rapids for 57 years. He was an avid gardener, sportsman, and outdoorsman. Jim gave freely of his time to his family, friends, and church. Survivors include wife, Marie; sons, Randall and wife, Barbara, Ryan and wife, Carol, and Donald; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Kimball. In addition to his immediate family, Jim is survived by his brothers, Albert H. and Dexter L.; and sisters, Mary Mattatall, and Angie Henderson. He was predeceased by his brothers, Eugene R. and Alvah W. Ashley. In his memory, contributions may be made to Washington Academy, East Machias.
