VERO BEACH, Fla. – James N. McNamara, 77, died unexpectedly after a short illness Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at the Indian River Memorial Hospital. Mr. McNamara was born in Bangor and moved to Vero Beach, Fla. in 1990, from Clearwater, Fla. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years and retired in 1984, from the Maine Air National Guard as a master sergeant, after 28 years of service. He and his wife then managed the Lucerne Beach Club in Lucerne-In-Maine for eight summers. During his retirement, he became an avid reader and golfer and took great pleasure in playing poker with his buddies. He enjoyed the many cruises he and his wife were able to take. Mr. McNamara had worked at Dodgertown spring training and worked as a starter and ranger for the Dodger Pines Golf Club in Vero Beach, Fla. He was a member of the Second Congregational Church in Brewer, of the Ralph J. Pollard Masonic Lodge in Orrington and the ANAH Shrine Temple in Bangor. He attended the Community Church in Vero Beach, Fla. Mr. McNamara had a great appreciation of nature and wildlife. Prior to his retirement, he spent many years skiing, camping, snowmobiling and fishing. He particularly enjoyed the camp he built in Brownville, Maine. “Mac,” as he was known by his family and friends, will lovingly be remembered for his “wicked” sense of humor and sharp wit. He was a great friend and loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Donna L. McNamara of Vero Beach, Fla.; two daughters and their husbands, Debra and William Tracy of Milton, Vt. and Kim and Gregory Sferes of Freeport; two grandsons, James and Joshua Tracy; and a granddaughter, Sorya Sferes. Interment and final services will take place at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, in the spring. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
