HOULTON and NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – James Putnam Archibald, 94, died May 28, 2006, at his residence. He was born May 17, 1912, in Houlton, the son of Bernard and Emma (Putnam) Archibald. A long and brilliant career in law began with graduation from Bowdoin College and Boston University Law School. Justice Archibald served as Aroostook County Attorney from 1942-1950 and as special assistant attorney general for the State of Maine from 1950-1952. He was appointed justice of the Maine Superior Court in 1956, justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine in 1980, and active retired justice of the Supreme Court from 1980 until 2005. In 1997, the Aroostook County Courthouse was rededicated in his name. In addition to his law career, Justice Archibald was a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of the First Church of Houlton, Unitarian, the past master of the Monument Lodge AF & AM, the Aroostook Royal Arch Chapter, the Saint Aldamar Commandery, the Rotary Club, the Houlton Lodge of Elks and the Fidelity Chapter of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Maine Bar Association, and the Aroostook County Bar Association. He also served on the Board of Directors for Houlton Regional Hospital, the First National Bank of Houlton, and the Houlton School Board. He is survived by his son, Dr. James K. Archibald and his wife, Rachel, of Montreal, Quebec; his daughter, Susan A Kluge and her husband, Frederick, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; grandsons, James Brown of Cumberland, Marc Brown of Wake Front, N.C., Frederick Brown of Melrose, Mass., Georges Archibald and A. Benjamin Archibald, both of New York, N.Y., Samuel Archibald of Montreal, Quebec; granddaughter, Leslie Jagoe of Maputo, Mozambique; great- grandchildren, Parker and Emily Brown of Cumberland, Austin and Abbey Brown of Wake Front, N.C., Jack Brown of Melrose, Mass., Mollie, Sommers, Garrison and Leta Jagoe of Maputo, Mozambique; nieces, Rebecca Miller and Nancee Campbell; nephews, Bruce Campbell and Gary Severson. James was predeceased by his wife, Leta Kitchen Archibald; two sisters, Mary Campbell and Ruth Archibald. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
