HAMPDEN – Jan E. Maddocks, 56, died Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at a Bangor hospital, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born Sept. 1, 1950, in Waterville, the daughter of Harry C. and Betty (Gardner) Alward. Jan married Brian E. Maddocks, Aug. 21, 1971. She was employed by Wal-Mart for 12 years, enjoying many titles, most recently as an assistant in personnel. It was in this position that Jan made many close friendships that still continue. Her childhood years were spent in the neighborhoods of Skowhegan, as well as many wonderful summers at the family camp on Moose Pond, St. Albans. It was at this camp where Jan shared count-less special moments with cherished friends and family. She spent many hours involved with Special Olympics, Boy Scouts and other school activities for her children. Jan was tireless in her dedication to her husband, children and family. Her creativity showed in the wonderful scrapbooks she would create for family. Jan’s quick wit and sarcastic sense of humor were all qualities that friends and family loved. She was a longtime resident of Hampden and a graduate of Skowhegan High School, Class of 1968. She was predeceased by her parents, Betty, in 1989 and Harry, in 2007. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Brian Maddocks; three sons, Michael Maddocks and Tiffani Gilmore of Hampden, Craig Maddocks and Mandy Post of Old Town, and Christopher Maddocks of Hampden; two siblings, Judith (Alward) Laney of Skowhegan and John S. Alward of East Madison, one grandson, four “special” young boys, many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family expresses heartfelt thanks to all the staff at CancerCare of Maine, Eastern Maine Medical Center, and New Hope Hospice for their care and compassion. Special recognition to Dr. Thomas Openshaw of Eastern Maine Medical Center, for his tenacity, humor and dedication. Dr. Openshaw’s efforts gave us precious extra years to live, laugh and love. Visiting hours will be held 5-8 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hamp-den. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at the funeral home, with burial after at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden.
