BANGOR – Jean (White) Pelkey, departed this life peacefully Dec. 27, 2007. She was born a tiny preemie, weighing less than two pounds, Dec. 21, 1924, in Milo, the daughter of Ernest and Rebecca Spooner White. She graduated from Bangor High School in 1942. In 1946 she married Dana Horne and with him had three sons, Dana, Stevan and Brett. They were the focus of her life for many years and after they were grown she became a secretary for the athletic department at the University of Maine. As a wonderful family woman, she also lavished her love and care on her grandchildren. Later she married Clyde “Bucky” Pelkey, who predeceased her in 2005. She was an outstanding cook and a quilter of note. Many among her family and friends cherish the results of her sewing ability. She had an uncanny ability to make people happy. This was demonstrated during her last days, where she could bring laughter and chuckles to the nurses and patients in the home where she resided. We want to give special thanks to those at Westgate Manor, Bangor, for their care and love. The sons she leaves behind are Dana Horne and his wife, Alice, of California, Steve and Janet Horne of Argyle and Brett Horne, who lives in Bangor; there are eight grandchildren and the great-grandchildren they have given her. Surviving her also are a brother, Lloyd White of Lubbock, Texas; and her sister and best friend, Leah Clement, of Hulls Cove. Her older brother, Ernest, died in 1986. And we should remember her stepchildren, the six children of Bucky Pelkey and their offspring. It seems her life was very ordinary, but those who knew her will attest that the world was a better place with her in it and she will be sadly missed. There will be a gathering in her name 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Pine Grove Remembrance Center, Hammond Street Extension. Any of her loved ones and friends are invited. Also, those who wish to remember her in a special way may donate to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 170 U.S. Route One, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105.
