BANGOR and TUCSON, Ariz. – Robert A. “Bob” Davis, 82, died peacefully Dec. 25, 2007, in Tucson, Ariz., after a long and courageous battle with COPD. He was born Feb. 28, 1925, in New Portland, a son of Charles and Laura Davis. Bob spent most of his early years in Shirley Mills, graduating from Greenville High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army, 11th Armored Division, during World War II, fighting at the Battle of the Bulge. He married the love of his life, Betty Layman Davis, in 1949. After working in several parts of the United States, they returned home to settle in Bangor, where Bob worked 31 years driving trucks for Merrill Transport, retiring in 1990. During that time he earned Driver of the Year on several occasions. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Greenville, a life member of the National Rifle Association and avid sportsman. Bob never lost his love for the woods and the hunting and fishing of Maine. He was a wonderful family man, loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Betty (Layman) of Bangor; son, Glenn and wife, Elizabeth, of Collierville, Tenn.; son, Jeff and wife, Gayle, of Orrington; six grandchildren, Charlotte and Jonathan of Collierville, Tenn., Lauren, Daniel, Ashley and Megan of Orrington; two brothers, Keith and wife, Frances, of Greenville and Hugh and wife, Theresa, of Shirley; a sister, Colleen and husband, Floyd Ashe, of Shirley; many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be announced and held in Shirley Mills during the month of May.
