HERMON – Jon R. England “Jon Boy,” 68, went home to be with the Lord, Oct. 17, 2006. Jon was born May 3, 1938, in Bangor, the son of Maurice J. and Evelyn T. (Ricker) England. Jon was raised in Bangor and graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1956. He met his wife, Shirley, while she was in Bangor attending Beal College. They were married April 1958. They started a family the following year. He worked for the Carpenter’s Union for a few years, then took a job at Watson’s Hardware, Brewer, where he stayed for 25 years. All the while building several homes for his family, working many nights and weekends. The last house he built was in Carmel where they lived for more than 20 years. He attended the Hermon Baptist Church, where they met many wonderful friends. After the closing of Watson’s Hardware, he worked as a self-employed carpenter until he retired. Jon was a hard worker, but also took time to enjoy his family. He enjoyed many trips to the ocean, Acadia National Park and Pine Point. Jon was an avid snowmobiler, starting in the late 1960s, and he passed this passion on to his sons as they grew. He always attended the snowmobile races at Bass Park. Other interests included ice skating, basketball, ping pong, trucks and climbing Mt. Katahdin. He was happiest when he was building something and had a hammer in his hand. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Curry) England, March 8, 2006. Surviving, in addition to his mother, Evelyn England of Bangor, are two sons, Steven and his wife, Cindi, of Raleigh, N.C.; their children, Darren, Leah, Matthew, Paige and Brooke; Alan and his wife, Terri, of Orrington; their children, Ericka and Alexa; two sisters, Betty and her husband, Ernie Von Tobel, of Lewiston; Debbie and Michael Scully of Bangor; nieces, nephews and cousins; in-laws, Louis and his wife, Josephine Curry, of Houlton; Everett and his wife, Donna Curry, of Island Falls; Philip and his wife, Polly, of Pine Point; Phyllis Taylor of Ellington, Conn.; and Joyce and Dianne Curry of Portland. Relatives and friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Hermon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Garnett Chute, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Glenburn.
