PENOBSCOT – Joseph Lewis Ladd, 73, died unexpectedly April 26, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 2, 1932, in Brooksville, the son of Frederick W. Ladd and Arlena (Black) Ladd. He attended schools in Brooksville and the University of Maine, Orono. He served in the U.S. Army from April 1953 to April 1956. He married Martha A. Grindle March 23, 1957. He worked several years at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut. He spent many years fishing on his own boat as well as offshore fishing out of New Bedford, Mass. He also worked for H.W. Austin & Son before taking a job at St. Regis in Bucksport, from which he retired in 1994, after 28 years. Joe was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and canoeing. He had a sparkly personality and many, many stories to tell. He enjoyed playing cards with his “buddies.” Joe also enjoyed his family, especially teasing his grandchildren. He was active in the Bucks Mills Rod & Gun Club. He and his wife, Martha spent several years doing crafts with seventh and eighth grade students at Penobscot Elementary School and residents at Penobscot Nursing Home. His generous nature will long be remembered. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha A. (Grindle) Ladd. Joe was the oldest of six siblings and is survived by, Eugene Ladd, Louise Francis, Janet Limeburner, Judy Lebel and Edward Ladd. Joe and Martha had three children, Kimberly and husband, Neil McCombs, of Penobscot, Scott and wife, Lisa, of Penobscot, and John and wife, Jessica, of Orland. They had nine grandchildren, Dana, Thomas, Alicia, Tiffany, Jassica, Jan, Nichole, Joseph, and Katie; four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be held noon Wednesday, May 3, at Edgewood Cemetery, Brooksville. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Mitchell & Tweedie Funeral Home, Elm Street, Bucksport.
