SHREWSBURY, Mass. – Justin M. Whitney, 85, formerly of the Augusta, and Portland, regions died early in the morning, March 29, 2005, at Marlborough Hospital after a battle with pneumonia. Justin “Bud” was born Sept. 27, 1919, in North Anson, the first son of Bernard J. and Lina (Mitchell) Whitney. He graduated from Cony High School in the Class of 1937. He went to work for Central Maine Power Co. until 1941, when he entered the Navy (Sea Bees), serving honorably in the South Pacific during World War II. For many years he owned and operated Bud’s Express, a trucking company in Bangor. After relocating to Portland, Justin was employed at both Lyon Ferry and Cole’s Express until retiring. Spending many winters in Florida, he was a member of Methodist Church of North Fort Myers, Fla. He was a member of the Elks Club 188 and a 50-year member of the Masonic lodge of Bangor and a life member of the Navy Seabee Veterans of America. He was a lifelong Red Sox fan. Justin was predeceased by his first wife, Pauline Oxley Whitney of Bangor; his brother, Thomas E. Whitney; sisters, Carrie Whitney Caswell, Ruth Whitney Ranks and Roberta Whitney Perkins; and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Tabor) (Pratt) Whitney of Shrewsbury, Mass.; and a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Linda) MacEwen of Falmouth. He leaves one brother, John “Jack” E. Whitney of Portland; and four sisters, Mrs. Warren (Elizabeth) Sprague of Portland, Mrs. Thomas (Martha) Calderwood of Searsport, Mrs. George (Joan) Richardson of Wayne, and Mrs. Priscilla Dunn of Blue Hill; he also leaves two stepdaughters, Mrs. Ronald (Susan) Ramsay of Shrewsbury and Mrs. Harold (Linda) Trask of Dover, N.H.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 2, at Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta. Bud will be laid to rest at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, next to his first wife of more than 50 years, Pauline Oxley Whitney.
