SHREWSBURY, Mass. – Justin M. Whitney, 85, formerly of the Portland region, died early on the morning of March 29, 2005, at the Marlborough Hospital, after a long health battle. He was born Sept. 27, 1919, in North Anson, the son of Bernard M. and Lina (Mitchell) Whitney. Graduating from Cony High School, in the Class of 1937, he entered the U.S. Navy, serving honorably in the Seabees, in the South Pacific, during World War II. For many years, he owned and operated Bud’s Express trucking company, in Bangor. After relocating to Portland, Justin was employed at both Lynon Ferry and Cole’s Express until retiring. Spending many winters in Florida, he was a member of the Good Shepard Methodist Church, in North Fort Myers. A member of the Elks Lodge No. 188, he was also a 50-year member of the Rising Virtue Masonic Lodge in Bangor, and several other Masonic bodies. He was a member of V.F.W. No. 832, in South Portland and a life member of the Navy Seabee Veterans of America. Justin is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Pratt Whitney, of Shrewsbury, Mass., and his daughter, Mrs. Robert (Linda) MacEwen of Falmouth. He leaves four sisters, Mrs. Warren (Elizabeth) Sprague of Portland, Mrs. Thomas (Martha) Calderwood of Searsport, Mrs. George (Joan) Richardson of Wayne, Priscilla Dunn of Winthrop; a brother, John Whitney of Portland. He also leaves two stepdaughters, Mrs. Ronald (Susan) Ramsay of Shrewsbury, Mass., Mrs. Harold (Linda) Trask of Dover, N.H.; and two grandchildren. Friends are invited to join the family from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Chapel of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta, where a service of celebration will be at 2 p.m. He will be laid to rest at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
