ORONO and BANGOR Lawrence Edward Burney, 90, died May 4, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Feb. 17, 1917, in South Portland, the son of John M. and Elsi M. (McLaughlin) Burney. Lawrence graduated from South Portland High School, Class of 1935 and from the University of Maine in Orono, in 1941. He married the love of his life, Patricia Kathryn (Gogan) Burney, Oct. 28, 1944. Lawrence had diplomatic status in World War II and worked as a field engineer on aircraft carriers for Vought Aircraft and LTV Aerospace Corporation. After living in California, Texas and Japan, he and Patty moved back to Orono to retire. More than anything he loved his dear wife, Patty, airplanes, traveling, fishing, Chow dogs and the people of Orono. Lawrence was predeceased by his wife, Patricia (Gogan) Burney in 1997. He is survived by three nephews, a niece and many friends. A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Roland Nadeau, Catholic Chaplain of St. Joseph Hospital, presiding. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Orono.
