CARIBOU – Lawrence “Ike” Whitten, 72, died Feb. 20, 2006, in Caribou, after a 10-month battle with cancer. He was born March 5, 1933, in Fort Fairfield, the son of Ernest and Elizabeth (Kinney) Whitten. He attended schools in Bridgewater and Mapleton. Lawrence worked as a drywall finisher for many years in the Lowell, Mass. area, after he worked three years for the town of Litchfield, N.H., retiring at the age of 62. He was a member of the Gor-B-Inn Hunters Club and was a 30-year member of the Painters Union Locals No. 39 in Lowell, Mass. and No. 577 of Cambridge, Mass. Lawrence enjoyed hunting, fishing and long drives in the woods. He loved his time spent with his wife and “Garden” of children and grandchildren. He married Roberta (Smith) Whitten Jan. 12, 1954. Surviving in addition to his mother, Elizabeth of Presque Isle; and his wife, Roberta of Caribou; are four sons, Robert Whitten and his wife, Theresa, of Litchfield, N.H., Scott Whitten and his wife, Louise and Chuck Whitten, all of Londonderry, N.H. and Mark Whitten and his wife, Rene’, of Nashua, N.H.; two daughters, Lori Lambert and her husband, Robert, of Hudson, N.H. and Ann Tierney and her husband, Peter, of Jensen Beach, Fla.; five brothers, Thomas Whitten of Ohio, James Whitten of South Carolina, Joe Whitten of Crouseville, Lewis Whitten of Florida and Jere Whitten of Presque Isle; one sister, Mrs. Steven (Dorothy) Sines of Mapleton; eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Brooke, Blair, Ally, Paige, Victoria, Zachary and Cody; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his father, a son, Peter; a daughter, Kristi; and by three brothers, William, Dale and Roger Whitten. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the chapel of the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to contribute in memory of Lawrence may do so to the Special Olympics of Maine or to the Meals on Wheels Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, 33 Davis St., Presque Isle, ME 04769. Envelopes may be obtained through the funeral home.
