BANGOR – Leon E. Smith, 90, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at his home in Bangor. He was born Feb. 12, 1914, in Otto, Texas, the son of James and Ethel (Smith) Smith. Leon was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. He worked for 32 years for the Department of Defense, retiring to Bangor in 1978. Leon is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Constance (Hall) Smith of Bangor; six children, Wanda Lawless, Lori Sampson and her husband, David, Mona McLaughlin and her husband, Allen, Tammi LaTouche and her husband, Derek, Linda Hill, Roger Dow and his wife, Melissa; 15 grandchildren, Kevin Lawless and his wife, Shawnda, Tari Edwards and her husband, Jason, Brenda Sampson and Jason Benson, Judi Sampson, Derek McLaughlin and April Novak, Justin and Mitchell McLaughlin, Scott Phillips Jr., Katrina Phillips, Kiara and Dalanni LaTouche, Colton Hill, Kaeli Hill, Michael Dow and Briana Dow; six great-grandchildren, (the little cotton pickers) Tristian, Deacon, and Neisa Lawless, Kyli Sampson, Jayden Edwards and Damon McLaughlin; a sister, Corrie Robinson; a brother, Vernon Smith; four brothers and sisters-in-law and their families, Jacqueline Perkins, Cecil Hall, Mona Farren and Leon Hatt Jr.; a special thank you to his niece, Alice Thompson of Groesbeck, Texas, who kept communication open between Texas and Maine; his best friends, Charlotte and Les Hanscom; special friends, James Hixson, Scott Phillips Sr., Daryl Willett, Keith Stewart, Charles and Terri Lawless, Erin Staples, Curtis Fairbourne, Aimee Stormann and Dude; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Papa was predeceased by his parents; 12 brothers and sisters; his mother-in-law and friend, Florence Hall; one of his beloved cotton pickers, Dylan Samuel Grifasi-Lawless, who will now be keeping him busy, loved, and entertained until we can join them in heaven. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Harrington Baptist Church, Main Street, Harrington, with Pastor Danny Davis officiating. Interment will be at the Forest Hill Cemetery, Harrington.
