DEER ISLE – Leslie E. Spencer “Chuck,” 73, died April 19, 2008, with his family surrounding him at a Bangor hospital. He was born April 23, 1934, in Carmel, one of 10 children born to Moses and Beryl Spencer. The family moved to Stonington in 1941. Leslie was a member of Joshua Davis Lodge No. 145, the Marine Lodge No. 122 AF & AM, Deer Isle Stonington and the American Legion Post No. 0016, Skowhegan. He served his country in the Army, 1956-1958 and 1961-1963. He was a master electrician by trade, but purse seining, especially on the “Duchess,” was his passion. He went lobstering and seining with his brother, Richard, and lobstering this past year with his grandson, Tim. He was a “jack of all trades,” helping out the fisherman, his family and anyone that needed help. He spent many hours fishing and hunting with “the boys.” Leslie will be sadly missed by his wife of 51 years, Eliza; three daughters, Robin and fiance, Tracy, Roxanne and husband, Francis, and Teena and husband, Troy; one granddaughter, Elizabeth; four grandsons, Anthony, Thomas, and his girlfriend, Tia, Vincent and Timothy. They were the light of his life. He is also survived by five brothers, Herbert, Richard, Leroy, Gordon and Everett; two sisters, Charlotte and Pearl; sisters-in-law, Alice, Patti, Irene, Lynda, Patricia, Elsie, Gloria, Suzanne, Caty, Barbara and Robin; and brothers-in-law, Cliff, John, Buz, Jim, Perley, Fred, Dick and Rodney. He was predeceased by a son, Leslie Elwood Spencer “Tinker”; his parents; two brothers, Jeep and Carroll; two sisters-in-law, Millie and Flossie; mother-in-law, Isabel; also Elwood and Justine Snowden; special friend, Kelly Boyce, who was like a daughter; George Boyce and Steve Robbins II, who he spent many hours with. During his teenage and young adult years he lived and worked with Dick and Stella Billings, Larna and Harlan. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. A service of remembrance will be celebrated 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Deer Isle Congregational Church with the Rev. Alice Hildebrand, pastor, officiating. The officers and members of Joshua Davis Lodge No. 145 will conduct the Odd Fellows ceremony and the U.S. Army will provide military honors. Private interment will be at Hillside Cemetery.
