GAINESVILLE Fla. – Louis A. Ploch, 81, of Gainesville, Fla., died Dec. 11, 2003, at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and lived in Orono for more than 45 years. He was a professor of sociology at the University of Maine. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was on the Governor’s Committee on Aging, Rehabilitation Commission and Community Development Society. He was a member of Alpha Kappa Delta, Phi Kappa Phi and the American Sociological Society. He was a member of the Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono. He was a professor emeritus at the University of Maine, co-author of rural sociology textbooks, consultant to state of Maine on population migration. He is survived by his wife, E. Jean Ploch of Gainesville; son, Richard Ploch of Gainesville; daughter-in-law, Mary Ploch of Gainesville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; nephew, Leslie Brucker of Cascade, Wis. He was predeceased by a son, James M. Ploch. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17 at Forest Meadows Funeral Home, 725 NW 23rd Ave., Gainesville, FL 32609.
