BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Louise McIlhenny Roberts, 87, died at Beaumont, a retirement community in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 21, after living with cancer for 37 years. She was the only daughter of Francis S. McIlhenny and Marie Louise(Hoopes) McIlhenny. Mrs. Roberts was a life long resident of Chestnut Hill, Pa. In 1938, she married Bayard Henry Roberts, which was for them, the beginning of 66 wonderful years together. Mrs. Roberts was a lady of great charm, style and widely admired beauty. To the very end, she remained a dignified, caring person, whose humor and grace never failed her. Mrs. Roberts had an abiding interest in horticulture, locally, she was a member of the Mount Desert Island Garden Club and the Cranberry Club of Northeast Harbor, Maine. She spent most of her summers on Mount Desert Island enjoying all that it offers, especially walking, “sunset cruises” on the family boat and cruising along the coast. She was predeceased by her parents, her stepfather, Edgar Allan Poe; her brother Francis; and her youngest daughter, Selina Roberts Ottum. Mrs. Roberts is survived by her husband, Bayard; her brother, Alan McIlhenny of Northeast Harbor; three daughters, Louise Roberts Johnston of Chestnut Hill, Pa., Sydney Roberts Rockefeller of Seal Harbor and Patricia Roberts of New York City; two sons-in-law, Hugh Mc.B. Johnston III of Chestnut Hill, Pa., Philip K. Ottum of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at Saint Mary’s by-the-Sea, Northeast Harbor, and a memorial service 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the Church of Saint Asaph’s, Bala Cynwyd, Pa. Burial will be private.
