SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Lt. Col. Hazel I. Snowden, 94, passed away July 8, 2005, in Santa Rosa, Calif. with her friend of 60 years Lt. Col. Nora Howe at her side. Hazel was born Sept. 8, 1910, in Somerville, Mass. and the family later moved to Harmony. She graduated from Harmony High School and then moved to Bangor. Later she moved to Boston to pursue a career in Nursing and graduated from New England Baptist Hospital. Following her graduation she enlisted in the Army Nurses Corp. Hazel served in World War II and in the Korean War. She was Chief Nurse of a Korean M.A.S.H Unit and of Military Hospitals in Tokyo, Japan and Munich, Germany. Hazel served 27 years and received two bronze stars. After retirement she was chief nurse of the Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas. She is predeceased by her parents, James A. Snowden, and Ethel [Russell] Snowden; brothers, James C. Snowden and Anson Snowden; sisters, Sarah Brooks and Viola. She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Stone; and by many nephews and nieces. Hazel will be interred in a Columbarium at the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
