BANGOR – Lucy Williams Quimby died peacefully Feb. 1, 2005, at Westgate Manor after a long illness. She was born in Springfield, Mass., in 1919 and grew up in Exeter, N.H., and New Harbor, Maine. She graduated cum laude in biology from Radcliffe College in 1940, married Thomas H.E. Quimby, and studied public health at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1960 she received her MAT from Michigan State University. She taught at the American School in Monrovia, Liberia, where her husband was Peace Corps Country Representative. Later she taught biology at Spingarn, a public high school in Washington, D.C. She and her husband retired to New Harbor, where she volunteered for Hospice and Literacy Volunteers. Lucy was a persistent and enthusiastic birder and an avid naturalist. She loved sea anemones, slime molds, wild ginger, rhinoceros beetles, night-blooming cereus and trailing arbutus. She was a connoisseur of fresh vegetables, perfectly cooked. She had a lively and pervasive curiosity and enjoyed considering things from many angles. She is survived by her brother, Hugh G. Williams, of Round Pond; her daughter, Lucy G. Quimby, of Bangor; her son, Thomas B. Quimby, of Albany, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her family is deeply appreciative of the excellent care she received at Westgate Manor. Donations in her name may be made to the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, 1225 Eye St., NW, Ste 1100, Washington DC 20005 (www.bradycampaign.org).
