BELFAST – Maine Hills Jr., 86, lifelong resident of Belfast, passed away on March 17, 2004, at a local hospital. He was born on Sept. 4, 1917, in Belfast, the son of Maine Sr. and Geneva (Heal) Hills. Maine served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, ending his service as a pilot instructor in Texas. After the war Maine graduated from Pharmacy School in Massachusetts, and ran the City Drug Store in Belfast for many years. He was a plank owner of the Belfast Curling Club, a member of the Belfast Rotary Club and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Maine enjoyed hunting, fishing, harness racing and swimming and was the first lifeguard at the Belfast City Pool. He always cared about his customers and also loved animals. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a son, Maine “Chuck” Hills III; a son-in-law, Galen Howes; and a brother and sister-in-law, Stetson and Faye Hills. Maine is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruby (Milligan) Hills of Belfast; four children, John Hills and his fianc‚e, Carole, of Portland, Peter Hills of Waldo, Parker Hills of Belfast, and Ellen Howes of Arundel; two grandchildren, Isaac Howes of Wells, and Geneva Howes of Arundel; two nephews and one niece. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at the First Church of Belfast, Church Street.
